2020 land-cover map of Côte d'Ivoire
Find out more about this free spatial information tool that will contribute to the transparency of land use in Côte d'Ivoire.
As part of the implementation of its National Strategy on Sustainable Cocoa, the Government of Côte d'Ivoire has produced a 2020 national land-cover map, with technical and financial support from the European Union.
With the emergence of new requirements for the production and trade of agricultural products (the African Standard for Sustainable Cocoa - ARS 1000 - and the European Union Deforestation Regulation - EUDR - on cocoa, coffee, rubber and oil palm, among others), the national land-cover map is an essential tool for helping operators in meeting compliance obligations. This map has been produced using robust methodology based on satellite images, the latest spatial data processing technologies and field data.
In this video, you will find answers to the following questions: What is a national land-cover map? What is the purpose of a land-cover map and who is it intended for? How was this map produced and by whom? What can we learn from the 2020 map? How can it contribute to transparency in Côte d'Ivoire's agricultural sector and the fight against deforestation?

    even though legal logging is better regulated, it is still the most impactfull in degradating ecosystems. so while i understand that people want to stop illegal logging, and its causes (both in survival of loggers and their loved ones, and in the demand for wood irrespective of the effects of logging), it should not be a justification, that 'as long as it happens legal it is good'. justice goes beyond legality, whether it is race justice, or justice towards animals and ecosystems. we should never go beyond necessity, when it is causing suffering, or ecosystem degradation. besides this, reforesting is not the solution either, the amazon forest is an intricate system of biological interactions, a web of lifeforms engaging in many ways, planting trees is just a small fragment of this. and its benefits depend wholly on the many lifeforms to spread and be able to live within that forest, which creates its own difficulties. it is similar to having been ill and taking antibiotics to counter intestine infection, after this healthy bacteria can recolonise your guts and replace the dead ones , but it is also a free game for unhealthy ones. people can still get sick after taking antibiotics, as side effect. So while trees are better than no trees, especially when those trees are specifically grown to replace legal and illegal deforestation. but it cannot replace an ecosystem. and in developing ecosystems, one must be wise, and work together with the present species, to not depend to much on their resilience, and their ability to bounce back. As the amazon shows: once a certain treshhold is reached, it could be the end of that forest, it cannot sustain itself, create its own precipitation by spreading nucleotides and water vapor. That lush forest we see now, within this century might turn into a desert, and it wont matter, whether illegal or legal loggin would cause it. nature doesn't care.

    Are you aware that by girdling spruce trees you could be creating an ideal habitat for the 8 toothed spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus, which is a major forestry pest in Europe and which causes great ecological and economic damage to forests?

    • @lpeterman
      @lpeterman Місяць тому

      I'm sure the biologists and entomologists are quite aware of the risk posed. DO remember that insects are ALWAYS present in a healthy environment and it's the balance, or tipping point which causes infestation. If the remaining trees are healthy and properly spaced, then a normal amount of insect damage is acceptable. Girdling or tipping a few random spruce trees for habitat in some cases is better than allowing the invasive species to take up habitat and resources from the natives. Please, before you launch a scathing response, please know I am an 80-acre forested property owner/manager in the Willamette Valley of Oregon and know FAR BETTER than most what Five-spined Ips beetles can do to a Ponderosa pine stand. I live and work with fir engraver beetles and other insects in my stands of Doug-fir and Grand fir. The destruction, if unchecked, can be economically devastating as well as heartbreaking when you watch your hard work over decades die standing.

    • @toberwine
      @toberwine Місяць тому

      @@lpeterman I think your comment is naive. I suspect your ecosystem in Oregon is more natural and intact than the typical man-made forested area Western Europe, in an intensively managed landscape with very few natural forests left and many non-native species. Such forests are far less able to resist the destructive outbreaks you refer to, and responsible land managers should be doing their utmost to minimise the risk. If the managers of this area in Denmark want to girdle / veteranise trees, they should be choosing species other than Norway spruce - if the spruce are unhealthy already they should be removed.

    • @lpeterman
      @lpeterman Місяць тому

      @@toberwine I will bow to your obviously greater local knowledge. I will however stand firm on my assertion that the Forestry biologists and entomologists have a grasp on the situation. As a Veteran of the US Army, I like to use the phrase: "Officer on the ground"; meaning, the person at the sharp point of the spear, who can see/assess the information at the moment and knows more that the arm-chair generals, far removed from the real-world situation. Naive I may be of the Danish Forest health techniques, but management techniques evolve and adapt, and my original point is valid; turning invasives into habitat trees for other species, (bugs and birds) to use and thrive upon is a worthy trade-off. I await your riposte.

    I was impressed with all the presentations, especially seeing the people's perceptions of the forest restoration initiative and the conflicting interests of people in these areas, I'm really curious about what the people in my area would feel about this issue. These topics concern all people around the world, but it could have been something if it had been done in Somalia since it would have brought different answers because the majority of the people here are pastoralists. I'm an immature researcher, but I'm already considering trying similar research in this area. Thank you for the presentations, I couldn't get off my eyes.

    this started off well - nice and clear, and it ended with far too much jargon and far too little plain language. "Reduce fuel loads and fuel continuity" - stop flammable things building up in the forest. "Suppression efforts" - keeping fires small and under control. instead of talking about "ecosystem services" you should say keeping plants and animals alive and in balance. it's just bad communication to use all this abstract jargon, even if it means something to professionals. bio regional full sustainable circular economic feedback blah blah blah. every second word was a buzz word. You should run this past an expert in clear communication before deciding it's finished...

    Goooooood, BUT,at least in "My corner of the woods" (Belgium), there is a very disturbing trend. If its woody we can "chip" it for CASH. This has lead to every available twig being chipped up. Leaving no edges of industrial woods, or old rail line verges for example. BUT THESE ARE EXACTLY THE BIODIVERSITY HOTBEDS WHERE OUR FUTURE FORESTS COULD COME FROM! We have more "Forest" than 100 years ago in Europe, but HOW MUCH OF IT IS NATIVE or OLD GROWTH. These are the places to revitalise our biodiversity of Fauna & Flora. These are the woods to MITIGATE AGAINST FLOODING with the RESILIENCE to withstand everything our changing climate can throw at it. Sorry that was a bit long and ANY woods are better than no woods! So keep on fighting for the heritage of our great grand children.

    Jag tycker att det bör granskas om staterna med regeringar var och är lagstadgade med Bibeln skriven som en berättelse på grund av ålderdom för att undvika demokratiska val. Ordet immunitet kommer från en religiös uppenbarelse från medeltiden, troligtvis från en påve för att bli laglös som sedan används till personlig immunitet (kung) och funktionell immunitet för regeringars lagbeslut och handlingar. Detta kan vara anledningen med att uppnå ett politiskt högersyfte och med religiös och kunglig indoktrinering på barn och för att vinna valen senare i livet, bakom ryggen på det röstande folket. Jag tycker även att det bör granskas om soldater i släktträden lurades in i krig på grund av odemokratiska val. Det politiska utnyttjandet av det livsviktiga ekosystemet har nu lett till skogsdöd (force majeure) och avståndet mellan solen och Antarktis är för alltid förstört, hur kommer det att påverka människors ekonomi etc.

    Allein durch hohe Temperaturen entsteht kein Waldbrand, auch nicht bei 40°C und mehr. Verhält es sich dagegen mit Zigarettenkippen, Lagerfeuern und heiß gelaufenen Maschinen, die bei anderer Witterung völlig ungefährlich wären. Die Hitze allein löse keine Brände aus, denn dazu bräuchte es Temperaturen von 200-300 Grad Celsius. Außerdem würden ständig Mythen verbreitet, wonach weggeworfene Glasflaschen oder Metallfolien Brände auslösten. Ihr Medien sollt endlich aufhören die Wahrheit zu verdrehen.

    In the state of Victoria, Australia we currently log a tiny potion of the native forest it is all replanted a sustainable and renewable resource. The government and conservationists here are thinking they are doing the best thing for the environment are stopping native timber logging in 2030. We don't have enough plantation timber to fill our replacement needs with the loss of native logging meaning loss of more jobs and the collapse of small rural communities. Where is that timber coming from? We currently import nearly 6 billion dollars of raw timber each year and Interpol says we import approx 800 million of illegally harvested timber into Australia this total doesn't include all the imported processed timber with unknown origin. Australia's demand for timber is going to jump after 2030. The conservation movement in Australia doesn't realise the damage they are doing to the world through deforestation in other countries and pollution costs of long distance transportation for their desire to stop native timber logging in the state of Victoria, Australia.
